The vinegar bottle

Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived inside a bottle of vinegar. One day a kind fairy just happened to be passing by and heard the little girl grumble: - Poor me, poor me, poor me. It isn't fair that I should have to live in a vinegar bottle, I should be living in a little cottage with a nice, warm roof and with the walls covered in climbing roses!- So, the fairy said:- Very well, this evening when you go to bed, turn over three times, close your eyes and tomorrow morning you will see what you will see. ' So the little girl went to bed, rolled over three times, closed her eyes and when she opened them the next morning she found herself in a small cottage with a nice, warm roof and the wall covered with climbing roses.

She was really surprised and was very pleased but forgot to thank the fairy. The kind fairy who, in the meantime went here and there, absorbed by the many things that she had to do, one day exclaimed: - Let's go and see how that little girl is getting on. She should be very happy in her little cottage. When she arrived at the door, she heard the little girl grumble: - Poor me, poor me, poor me. It isn't fair that I should have to live in a cottage all by myself. I should be living in a nice terraced house in a row with other terraced houses, with lace curtains at the windows and the front door facing the market place where there are always lots of cheerful people.- The kind fairy was really quite surprised to hear this, but said:- Go to bed, turn over three times, close your eyes and tomorrow morning you will see what you will see.- So, the little girl did as she was told, and the next morning, there she was in a nice terraced house, in a row with other terraced houses, with lace curtains at the windows and the front door facing the market place full of cheerful people. The little girl was really surprised and very pleased, but forgot to thank the fairy. The fairy who in the meantime went here are there absorbed the hundred or so things she had to do, one day exclaimed: - Let's go and see how that little girl is getting on. She should be very happy in her new terraced house. But when she arrived there, she found the little girl moaning: - Poor me, poor me, poor me. It isn't fair that I should have to live in a terraced house that is the same as all the others, I should be living in a grand country house surrounded by a lovely garden and with many servants that I can rule over with an iron hand.- Well, the fairy was really quite surprised to hear this and was more than somewhat put out, but said: - Very well, go to bed, turn over three times, close your eyes and tomorrow morning you will see what you will see. So the little girl did as she was told and the next morning , there she was, in a grand country house surrounded by a lovely garden and with many servants that she could rule with an iron hand. The little girl was really surprised and very pleased, but she completely forgot to thank the kind fairy. The fairy who, in the meantime went about here and there, absorbed by the thousand things that she had to do, one day exclaimed: - Let's go and see how that little girl is getting on. By now, she should certainly be happy and content!- But when she came up to the window of the living room, she heard the little girl announce in a very loud voice and in a very snobbish tone: - This residence is not to be deemed fit for a person of my class. It's a real disgrace that I should have to live here without company and without a rich social life full of engagements! I should be a duchess, or a lady-in-waiting to the Queen and ride in a carriage with two footmen that attend to my every whim. -

The kind fairy was really very surprised to hear this and was exceedingly annoyed, but said: -Very well, go to bed, turn over three times, close your eyes and tomorrow morning you will see what you will see.- So, the little girl did as she was told and the next morning there she was: a duchess, a lady-in-waiting with two footmen who attended to her every whim. She was very surprised indeed and very, very pleased; but, she completely forgot to thank the kind fairy. The fairy, who in the meantime went here and there absorbed by the thousand and one things that she had to do, one day exclaimed:- Lets go and see how that little girl is getting on. Now that she is a duchess, she must surely be happy!- But no sooner had she arrived at the window of the magnificent r oyal palace then she heard the little girl whine in a very sophisticated voice:- It's an absolute disgrace that I should only be a simple duchess and have to curtsy to the Queen. I should be sitting on a golden throne with a crown on my head and surrounded by ladies-in-waiting.- Well, I can't tell you how astonished the fairy was to hear this and this time was really very angry indeed, but said: - Very well, go to bed, turn over three times, close your eyes and tomorrow morning you will see what you will see.- So, the little girl did as she was told and the next morning when she opened her eyes she was sitting on a golden throne, with a crown on her head and surrounded by many ladies-in-waiting. She was feeling very pleased with herself and immediately started giving out orders right and left. But, not for a moment did she think to thank the kind fairy. The fairy, who in the meantime went here and there absorbed by the countless things that she had to do, one day exclaimed: -Let's go and see how that little girl is getting on. Now, she must be completely satisfied.- But just as she was about to enter the throne room, she heard the little girl complaining and say: -It's a disgrace, an genuine disgrace that I should only be Queen of this ridiculous, silly, little country when I could be Queen and rule the whole world instead! I want to be the Pope, this is my true calling and dominate the souls of every living thing on earth! 'Very well ' said the fairy. ' Go to bed, roll over three time, close your eyes and tomorrow morning you will see what you will see.- So, the little girl did as she was told; she went to bed, rolled over three times and shut her eyes. When she reopened them the next morning, there she was& back in the vinegar bottle.
