Truncus arteriosus From
the heart originates only one artery, the common arteriosus trunk from
which originates the pulmonary arteries, the coronary arteries and aorta. A large VSD is always present which allows both the ventricles to empty in the arteriosus trunk; frequently the trunk valve is incompetent. In most of the cases there is an increase of the pulmonary blood flow and pressure and the child with this heart disease present early heart failure. The corrective surgery must be performed within few months and it consist in the detachment of the pulmonary arteries from the trunk and their connection with a conduit to the right ventricle; the VSD is closed with a synthetic patch.
